6 months, a half year.

Friday was the 24th of October, exactly six months since the birth of Maxwell. Every time the 24th hits I always get a little more sad, a little more aware of our painful loss. This month was particularly extra incredibly terribly sad. I cried when I woke up. I cried in the shower.I cried in the car taking my kids around town. Ugly cry.  And after lunch, Lincoln and I went to visit Maxwell's park. We took some flowers with us, and also a pumpkin covered with messages from us to Maxwell. Isabelle wrote "I miss you." Lincoln drew a spiderweb. Still no headstone and it breaks my heart. I sat in my folding chair at the foot of his plot and cried and cried and cried while Lincoln ran around collecting acorns and spinning pinwheels.

I remember driving to the cemetery way back in April to choose a plot for Maxwell. A piece of ground. I remember gingerly lifting my post surgical body into my dads tall suburban. I was self conscious to be wearing stretchy pants in public. My incision was still fresh. We drove to a cemetery tucked away in the trees, one I didn't know existed. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah played on the radio. I cried thinking about the times I had rocked my babies to sleep with the chorus of that song. We parked and got out, a kind woman opened a big map of the land and told me to select something I liked and she would see if it was reserved or not.

I didn't know what to choose. What makes a good piece of ground. What is beneficial when being buried. We ended up choosing a spot for Max up high on the hill, under a big oak tree. Quiet, secluded, with wind chimes. The woman hugged me and told me to drink lots of water. I'm still not sure what she meant, but she was nice.

When we had his service his little casket was so small. It seemed too small. You shouldn't ever have to bury someone that small, it is just too sad.

On Friday I remembered all the people that were there with us, and the songs that were sung, the lullaby that Sean played from texas. I remembered that Margo wanted to sit on my lap. I remembered the visits to his park over the last six months, the seasons that have changed, the leaves that have fallen. I looked around at that little place, my own sacred grove, for my son's body lies in rest there. I always feel a sense of reverence.

On a scale from 1-hard, Friday was HARD. It was sad. I cried kind of a lot. Linc asked "aww you miss bayee max?" and when I said yes he said, "I miss disneyland." Me too buddy, me too. The kids had a fall festival at Isabelle's school that night and I could barely get it together to attend. I felt like a non-person. I felt like a sub-par mother. But we went.

Grief comes in waves- big rolling thunderous waves. Just when I think I am in a good place, a day like Friday comes and it feels so fresh and stingy that all I can do is go through the motions until the wave passes and I feel more like myself again. It makes me tired.

How has it been six months since I held my baby!

a little jaunt to the state of cacti

Did you know that a cactus with no arms is called a spear? And that cactus arms can take 50-75 years to even grow? These are things I learned a few weeks ago. It seems that when either of my sisters give birth to new babies I get to go and visit.

So on a Thursday evening, I drove down to the airport and got on a plane BY MYSELF. No diaper bag, no wipes (though they are always handy.) Nary a fruit snack in sight. I read A BOOK for two hours IN A ROW. And when I landed my perky sister picked me up to drove me over to Morgans, where I spent four days holding babies and playing horsies and eating great food and maybe also doing some light shopping.

It was such an uplifting weekend.

When I visited Morgan in Utah after she had Margo, I brought Lincoln with me (he was six months and nursing.) It was a really fun visit, but Linc was pretty needy still so I didn't have a ton of free time to play or help Morgan. (He also slept the worst that weekend out of his whole entire life.) Mostly we sat around and fed our babies and watched reality TV and ate takeout. When I visited Sabrina after the birth of Quinn, I was newly pregnant with Max and in that nauseous/exhausted part of the first trimester. I remember being like peace out it's 9 pm I'm going to bed! Sorry Sabs. Anyway, I felt useful this trip, and it's nice to feel useful. Of course it was a little emotional (what isn't emotional these days.) for me, after all the plan was for me to bring Max on this trip so we could both sit around a feed our babies again. We talked about him a lot and I cried sometimes when I smelled Archers little head. He smells good.

We got out of the house quite a bit! Morgans a seasoned veteran so we went to the aquarium and to all our favorite restaurants and hit all the fun stores I don't have. (uh like all of them. ) Margo is just a few months younger than Lincoln and we had some good bonding time. My nieces call me Mimi and I hope it never ever ever changes, it is my most favorite. Everywhere we went people would comment on and touch Margo's curly hair! Seriously people want to pet her and I'm sure Morgan is like NO THANKS.

They have the cutest aquarium there- it's the perfect size for toddlers and smaller children. Plus I love aquariums so I would probably go even if we didn't have kids.

this is me in a bubble

He is still so little!
Food, glorious food! The pork salad from Cafe Rio, and also Sprinkles cupcakes. Don't be fooled, we bought two boxes of four = eight. Red Velvet is my favorite, although the seasonal pumpkin flavor was insane. Also what do we have to do to get a Paradise Bakery in Redding?!

On Saturday, Sabrina and I snuck away to the Mesa temple. This is one of the oldest temples- construction started in 1922! We met up with our old roommate, Kenady who we fondly refer to as Baxter. We met for lunch and I swear it was like no time had passed- we very well could have been in Provo having lunch between classes at BYU. I just love her. After lunch we did a session in the temple (if you are wondering what we do in temples click here.) We sat in the peaceful temple and all cried together as we quietly talked a little bit about Max and how he has changed our lives. I can feel him so near to me when I am in the temple, it is so special. "Mom I'm here, I'm with you!" I felt totally renewed.

This place is crazy, it's were all the nordstrom and nordstrom rack stuff comes to die. People line up before opening EVERY DAY to look for designer labels and then they resell them on ebay and this is their ENTIRE JOB. That gate lifted and people ran amok throwing stuff in their carts. I did find some great things though. (Leigh this would have given you hives.)

is this too many baby selfies. cause I have more.

Big thanks to my husband who took a day of off work and took care of our children for 4 days straight. He took them out to breakfast, to play trains, did pick up and drop off, and even braved church. He managed to put Izzie's hair in a ponytail (with a vacuum. yes.) and made sure the house was nice and tidy when I returned. He didn't even freak out when I came home with an extra suitcase full of new junk. He is my hero.

And thanks to Morgan for sharing her baby with me while I continue to miss mine. I can do hard things.

linc's morning at the farm

Last week, Lincoln and I had a field trip to the pumpkin patch with the co-op preschool we were a part of last year. Why does the pumpkin patch always make for cute pictures? Is it the colors? Or what? It's finally feeling like fall and I am so thankful, I was so sick of the triple digit heat.

Linc loves to be outside, he loves space to run, he loves animals, he loves dirt, so naturally he loved EVERYTHING about the big farm we went to visit. And all the big tractor equipment almost made his mind explode. I swear the kid does not. stop. moving. He really loves to play with Kira (calls her "Tear-ah), so this was a great opportunity for them to hang out for awhile without big sisters around. It was weird to just have one kid to keep track of- almost peaceful. Most of the other moms had babies in carriers or strollers, one joked with me and said, "looks like it's time for you to have another!" Ahhhh yeah let's just glide right over that. People- don't say weird things about babies and family planning to strangers, just don't. Anyway, I digress. Pumpkin patch was super fun and in the end, he picked a blue-ish pumpkin. Isabelle was not pleased she missed this whole event while she was at school, but we are doing a class field trip next week so she can pick a pumpkin too.

his little chubby fingers.
Kira looking like she's 14. I love her in pigtails, they just suit her.
Bennett

I told Linc we were gonna go for a hay ride on the tractor and he automatically ran for the tractor like NO PROB I'LL DRIVE.

"the fish was about this big."
"oh really tell me more!"

I just think he's so cute I could bite him.

Isabelle's Rainbow Unicorn Party

On the 4th, we celebrated Isabelle's fifth birthday. I love Isabelle so much, and when she decided she wanted a unicorn rainbow party I just sort of smiled and went with it. You see, I don't have very much experience in the multi-colored mythological creature party genre... I'm not even sure where her idea came from but she was SET.

We returned from Disneyland late Thursday and the party was Saturday morning, so it was a bit of a cram to get everything ready (seriously you should have seen the front room.) but I think it may have been her favorite party ever. She helped me plan quite a bit- had her say everything from the invitations to the activities and it was really fun to do together. Sometimes while Lincoln was napping she would come in and sit by me and we would browse party supplies together and pick stuff out. She is getting so grown up.

Anyway. The party. Was spectacular. She was so happy.

She was so excited about all the "wainbow tweats"
these little jello cups were one of my favorite parts

Our little friends
I think maybe it's time to have Isabelle stand by us for photos. Yeahhh she's like nine feet long.

She picked out this design from a few we looked at on etsy because I literally can not operate any computer program newer than like microsoft word, the '95 edition. I had them printed at vista print and they were great. I made this giant pin the horn on the unicorn game with some foam core and paint to match her invitation.

The smartest thing I've ever done was hire a face painter. BEST DECISION EVER. It doubled as entertainment and activity and favor and the kids loved picking out their designs and taking turns. This lady was really great with the kids and fast- we did 10 faces in an hour. (Linc passed on sitting still for five minutes to have something drawn on his face, surprise.)

one of my most favorite pictures of all time ever in the history of everything
could you die over madilyn's hair? It's amazing!

We also had a pinata with a BAT. It sort of goes against my better judgment but I had a hard time finding a pull string pinata that went with our theme. Each kid got a turn with two hits then I finished it because it was 100 degrees outside, I kid you not. (Funny story, I called my dad and asked him to bring a bat over because we don't even own one... he showed up at the door with this totally gruesome halloween bat decoration. He's all "here's your bat!" and laughed for like an hour. Dad you are the best.)

I love this so much. His tongue!

We had funfetti cupcakes and all sang to Izzie. Five! I can't believe she's five.

it was seriously too hot outside, we moved the tables indoors. cmon October get it together.

I love having birthday parties for my kids. I really like planning them and we have a great time- every birthday is special and I love celebrating each year. Every time we get together I think wow- it really takes a village- these are the same people that helped us move in and let our families sleep over at their houses. They were there to visit us in the hospital, and there with us to bury Max. How grateful I am for my community of friends and family.

Anyway, I think Isabelle had a great day filled with her favorite people and I really can't believe this was her fifth party. Loose teeth and full day school and she seems grown up. Though today she fell asleep on the way home from school and I got to pick her up and carry her inside like she was a toddler again.

PS- how awesome is this... from Aunt Sabs and Aunt Mo.
